Dundee United are still reeling from a miserable 2015-16 campaign when they finished bottom of the Premiership and were relegated. They did actually end the season well with 7 points from their final 3 games but it was far too little too late to do anything other than add a tiny touch of respectability to their points tally. They’ll be aiming for an immediate return to the top flight but they’ve made hard work of their two matches since they returned from the summer break.

A 1-1 draw in a friendly at Forfar and a penalty shootout win at the weekend against Arbroath wasn’t really what they were after given both clubs play in League Two and they may need to be a bit better here if they are to get the better of yet another side from that division in the shape of Cowdenbeath.

The Central Park side are also heading into the new season in a lower division than the one where they ended the previous campaign. They were relegated from League One after a play-off defeat to Queen’s Park and aren’t expected to make much impact on this competition. Their pre-season started well with a surprise win against Motherwell but they’ve lost 3 on the spin since including a 2-1 home defeat to Inverness in the League Cup at the weekend.

They will be encouraged by Dundee United’s leaky defence though. They conceded 70 goals last season in the Premiership, more than any other team and seem to have a problem keeping clean sheets even against the weaker teams as their recent results testify. Therefore an away goal is certainly a real possibility but Dundee United’s extra quality should still shine through and therefore backing Dundee United to win 2-1 at 17/2 looks a good bet here.

These sides last met 8 years ago in this competition with Dundee United winning 5-1 away from home.

Both teams have scored in all of Dundee United's last 7 matches and in 3 of Cowdenbeath's last 4.

Dundee United are hoping to complete the signing of Dutch forward Nick van der Velden in time for this game.

The visitors could make a few changes too from their defeat last week. Kyle Miller could come in.
