Aberdeen put in one of their best home European performances in recent times to take a commanding lead in this tie last week. As was the case in the 1st Qualifying Round against Fola Esch it took them over an hour to break the deadlock but a blistering final 20 minutes saw Adam Rooney, Jayden Stockley and Wes Burns score for the Scots and a 3-0 lead is a very comfortable one to take to Latvia for the 2nd leg.

The Dons still have two weeks until the new Scottish Premiership season starts but there can be no fitness worries now and barring any disasters they will have a 3rd Qualifying Round tie to look forward to before the league gets going.

Ventspils didn’t really show enough to suggest they are capable of getting back into the tie. They beat VĂkingur of the Faroes comfortably in the 1st Qualifying Round, winning both legs 2-0 but although they resisted well for most of the 1st Leg, they are finding Aberdeen a step up in class and while this game may be close over 90 minutes, there is almost no chance of them turning the aggregate score around.

Aberdeen will be a bit wary of the fact that they lost the 2nd Leg against Fola Esch of Luxembourg in the last round but they have tended to perform pretty well on the road in Europe in recent years and they should be fitter now than they were in that match. They don’t need to take any great risks here and will most likely opt for a relatively cautious approach and set an uninspiring Ventspils side the task of breaking them down.

The Dons should be able to hold them off and are capable of nicking a goal at the other end so consider backing Aberdeen to win 1-0 at at 7/1.

The sides met for the first time last week with Aberdeen winning 3-0.

There have been under 2.5 goals in all of Ventspils last 4 home Europa League games. Aberdeen have won their 2nd Qualifying Round away leg in each of the last two seasons and against stronger opposition than the Latvians.

The Latvians may be slightly bolder here in their approach which could mean a start for 22 year old forward Kaspars Svarups.

Aberdeen will be without Callum Morris through injury while Lawrence Shankland is no longer available after the Dons forward returned to St Mirren on loan.
