HJK battled to an away draw last week when they travelled to Bulgaria. The hosting side had the majority of the opportunities in front of goal, but HJK’s fine defending limited them to just one goal after the visitors took to lead in the 37th minute. Unfortunately they couldn’t hold on for an impressive victory, but a draw and an away goal isn’t too bad of a result for them.

This keeps their hopes of making it to yet another 3rd qualifying round in the Europa League well and truly alive. They haven’t been eliminated at this stage of the competition since 2009, and they have made it to the playoffs in five of their six continental campaigns since then, including one group stage appearance.

HJK did suffer a rare league defeat at the weekend though as Ilves beat them 1-0, which saw them relinquish their top spot in the Finland Veikkausliiga to Mariehamn. However, they are still in very good form overall with five wins, two draws, and one defeat in their last eight outings.

Beroe’s league campaign doesn’t start until the end of July, but their Europa League exploits and a club friendly have been keeping them busy enough. Going back into last season, they have won four and drawn three of their last seven matches. Prior to that they had lost five of nine and only won twice though.

The visitors Europa League history is a bit of a chequered one. They ended a 25 year wait back in the 2010/11 season when they returned to continental football, and since then they have been regulars in the qualifying rounds. However, they haven’t made it past the 2nd qualifying round since that first season back in the Europa League, and now they need a result in Finland.

This isn’t going to be an easy task for the visitors. HJK haven’t lost on home turf since last September, with 11 of their 15 fixtures since then ending in a victory for the hosts. Beroe have lost three of their last eight away days too. My prediction is for HJK to find the victory on Thursday, and odds of 10/11 for an HJK win look good value to me. I’m also backing a 2-0 correct score prediction at 7/1.

Last Thursday's 1-1 draw in Bulgaria was the first meeting between HJK and Beroe.

HJK have won 73% of their last 15 home games, losing 0%.
