Malmo endured a slightly sketchy start to the 2016 Sweden Allsvenskan season, and it led to more than a few fans thinking that another disappointing campaign was on the horizon. Last season they ended up down in 5th position in the Allsvenskan, missing out on continental football and just generally struggling throughout.

However, after they got over the initial hump this season they started to look more like the Malmo we have come to expect. Their draw against AIK last time out ended their seven match winning streak, but they are still unbeaten in eight and have only lost three of their Allsvenskan games all season.

With current title holders Norrkoping slipping up recently as well, it means Malmo have been able to leapfrog them and move top of the Allsvenskan. They are currently three points ahead of their title rivals and six points ahead of IFK Goteborg in 3rd position.

Kalmar disappointingly lost 4-2 against bottom of the table Gefle on Monday as their winless streak extended to three matches, although one of those was a friendly against Iraq.

Either way this is a downturn in form from the side that managed to win two and draw two of their four Allsvenskan matches before the summer’s break in play. Gefle have won two, drawn three, and lost two of their last seven matches in the league, with their most recent results seeing them slip to 12th position in the table. They are now just three points above the relegation playoff position, although a win on Saturday could send them as high as 7th.

Much of Malmo’s recent success has been down to an excellent showing in defence from them. They haven’t conceded in any of their last five home games in the Allsvenskan, winning all of them. My prediction is for Malmo to Win to Nil on Saturday, and odds of 11/10 for this outcome look pretty good value to me. I’m also backing a 2-0 correct score prediction at 11/2.

Malmo have won four, drawn one, and lost one of their last six meetings with Kalmar.

Malmo have won 86% of their home games this season, keeping a clean sheet in 72% of them.

Malmo are hoping to have a fully fit squad for this clash.

Kalmar are missing right midfielder Papa Diouf as he continues his recovery from a torn knee ligament.
