Queen of the South come into this game as favourites and they do so in fine form having enjoyed a pre season where they won all 4 friendlies and hammered in 17 goals although the opposition wasn’t particularly fierce. It seems to have done them some good though and they cruised to a 2-0 win at Queen’s Park at the weekend in their opening League Cup game thanks to 1st Half goals from Jake Pickard and Andy Dowie. They are not in a terribly difficult group so will have high hopes of progressing into the next round.

Airdrie are another side who did well in pre-season winning 3 of their 4 friendlies and they also won their final 3 games of last season so they headed into the League Cup with spirits pretty high. They fought well too against top flight Partick Thistle on Saturday but the League One side ultimately succumbed to a single Kris Doolan goal and it has left them with a lot to do in terms of continuing their participation in the competition beyond July.

Queen of the South faded away towards the end of last season but their record at Palmerston Park was a pretty good one and given they are playing with real confidence right now and are at home to a side from a lower league, you’d expect the hosts to emerge with all the points here. They’ve scored 15 goals in their last 5 home games including a 3-1 friendly win against South Shields so their attacking players are looking quite dangerous at the moment and they have just enough quality to put a little bit of distance between themselves and Airdrie.

Therefore consider backing Queen of the South -1.0 Asian Handicap at 2.050.

Airdrieoneans have only won 1 of the previous 6 meetings between the clubs.

Queen of the South have won 6 of their last 9 home games. Airdrie have lost 4 of their last 5 games in this competition, scoring 2 and conceding 11.

Lee Robinson, Jamie Hamill, Grant Anderson, Steven Rigg and Lyndon Dykes all made their debuts at Queen Park and should keep their places here.

Conor McLaughlin started in place of James Daly last time out and should keep his place here.
