Rangers boss Mark Warburton has been less than complementary about the new format of the Scottish League Cup and he appears to be using the competition as an extended version of pre-season. He has indicated there will be many changes here from the side that won 2-0 at Motherwell at the weekend and we could see Joey Barton in a Rangers shirt for the first time. The priority for Rangers is clearly going to be getting back to where they belong, which is competing at the top end of the Scottish Premiership but their cup final defeat to Hibs in May means their long wait for major silverware goes on and this competition offers them a good opportunity to end the drought.

Annan Athletic have fond memories of their last visit to Ibrox when they won a League 2 game but shouldn’t really pose much of a threat here. They are still in League 2 and judging by their last few matches they are likely to be staying there for a while longer. They come into this match following 3 defeats which all came at home. They lost 3-2 and 4-0 in friendlies against Airdrie and Queen of the South and got their League Cup campaign underway with a 2-1 loss against Stranraer at the weekend.

The gulf in class between these sides is now huge. Rangers have been quite active in the transfer market this summer and have brought in some players of real top level quality and experience. They’ve also beefed up their squad so even a much-changed side should still be able to overpower Annan.

Therefore consider backing Rangers -2.5 Asian Handicap at 1.675.

These sides met 4 times when Rangers were in League Two for the 2012/13 season. Rangers won twice but Annan won the most recent meeting which was also at Ibrox.

Annan have conceded 2 or more goals in 6 of their last 7 matches. Rangers have won 22 of their 26 home games under Warburton.

Rangers are set to rotate a bit and Warburton has already confirmed that Josh Windass, Matt Gilks, Clint Hill and Lee Hodson are all set to start against the Galabankies. Joey Barton could also feature at Ibrox for the first time.

Left back Stewart Sharkey is an injury doubt after picking up a knock in the weekend defeat.
